To help you be more prepared for the design, I would like to share three-step designer’s tips on how you can go about designing a pendant for your mum.
“There are three responses to a piece of design, yes, no and WOW! WOW is the one to aim for.” —Milton Glaser
1. Get inspired
This is the most important stage. Designing a piece of jewellery starts with inspiration. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Focus on the wearer’s needs and desires, followed by their lifestyle and personality. Once you can distinguish that, you would then be able to come up with a concept/theme for your design. Consider the gemstone you are working with, which is the 0.95ct heart-shaped ruby. Its dimensions are 5.6mm (height) by 6.1mm (width). Think about how to best bring out its beauty by considering its shape, size, and color.
2. Sketch out your idea
Once you have an idea in mind, sketch it out on a piece of paper. Do not worry, if you have no experience in designing. Practice makes perfect. Follow this infographic on how you can start to sketch out the heart-shape ruby.
Imagine the pendant design and work with a visual image in mind. First draw the gemstone, followed by the necessary components of a pendant setting. The original sketch would continue to evolve throughout the entire process.
3. Get creative with different styles and elements
Add various elements to create a design style. As a jewellery designer, I would use elements to create emphasis on the main gemstone. The goal is usually to draw attention to the primary stone. On the right side of the above image, I have sketched a few examples of how elements can be used to create a unique design.
Colored drawings would give us the ability to see our design better. Feel free to label your pendant’s components too. Make sure to put some thought on your design, but most of all, just have fun with it.
Thank you for taking the time to read this article. We hope these three steps would help inspire you to come up with creative designs for your entry. Remember, we will select the most creative and inspiring design as the winner for this competition. Good luck to all who take part in this contest!
